Advent Calendar - Door Three

Dear Santa,

this going lightweight stuff isn't easy, let me tell you. How the hell am I supposed to carry a tube of mustard for my sausages without that my UL friends make fun of me? Sawing of your toothbrush is one thing, but should I really buy those tiny tubes of toothpaste? Happily I found out that Trekking-Lite-Store.com as a range of small, conveniently sized mini bottles for liquides - those would be ideal to transport my mustard and other liquids in style and be the king among my UL buddies, showcasing true dedication (this re-filling is a messy business, I only can do it if my wife isn't at home). It'd be swell if you could get me one of these, Santa - I would even fill one with a good whisky and leave it on the mantelpiece next year.

Best,

- An aspiring UL-Backpacker

Leave a comment with the six liquids you plan to carry in them. While some might carry six different whiskys in them, alcoholic beverages are not allowed =)

UPDATE I

Dear Santa,

time to talk about lightweight stove systems. One name kept on popping up in my research, that of Trail Designs. They developed this thing called the Caldera Cone, which is pot support/ holder plus windscreen rolled into one. Genius, I tell you, Santa. But that wasn't enough for them, and they developed something called the Caldera Keg-F - the lightest commercial cooking system on the market! It makes use of an [empty] Fosters beer can, which you use as a pot. It has a 12-10 stove, a fuel bottle and a cozy for the pot included, pretty nifty, I think. All of it can be transported inside the can, or inside a caddy to give a bit of extra protection. A sweet deal, and you won't need to rob a bank to get me one!

Best,

- An aspiring UL-Backpacker

Draw a picture - digital or analog - of you using the Caldera Keg-F System and leave it in a comment underneath - you got till 18 o'clock Finnish time, so get those oil, pastel or water colours out and start painting ;)

Advent Calendar - Door 24

Dear Santa,

today is your big day, and I am not sure if this reaches you in time. I hope Rudolph is ready for the trip around the world, and that you'll bring plenty of lightweight presents to a lot of good people, for example the awesome readers of Hiking in Finland and Nordic Lightpacking.

Anyway, I was re-considering my wishes, and think I have decided on what I'd really would like to get this holiday season. A Terra Rosa Gear Wandering Tarp would allow me to experience the beauty of tarping. A mere 220 gram and made of tyvek, it has plenty of tie-out points and allows for various pitching options. Made in beautiful Sydney, Australia, I'm sure it will bring sunshine to my trips!

The OookWorks Multi-Shelter OookTub looks like the perfect solution to keep my sleeping place and gear dry in case the Australian sunshine doesn't succeed in coming through. A sweet 135 gram light including the limited edition festive OookWorks label, and a really smart strut system to have the sidewalls rise this is the perfect bathtub to go with the tarp. 220 cm long and 75 cm wide it even fits long folks.

To carry my tarp and OookTub and Wandering Tarp I believe the Sea to Summit Ultra Sil Daypack from Watzmann-Laden would be just the right tool for my shiny new UL gear. At 68 gram and 20 liters volume it is the right pack to keep with the UL idea, and should offer plenty of space for an overnighter with my new gear!

The final piece to UL bliss would be a LITEMOUNTAINGEAR Cuben Stuff Sack in Large. 7 gram for this 3 liter volume stuff sack would allow me to keep my down vest dry, or carry my UL kitchen.

All of it together weighs less than half a kilo (430 gram to be exact!) which gets me really excited! I'd love to find this sweet UL kit under my tree, and will make sure a hot cup of Minttu cacao is waiting for you, and a fresh supply of Reindeer Moss is waiting for Rudolph!

Best,

- An aspiring UL-Backpacker

Leave a comment with your most memorable outdoor experience and accompany it with a few photos. Advent Calendar - Door Six

Dear Santa,

what a day, or night actually. I was out on my own, and found this beautiful camping spot at the beach, a great view over the lake, let me tell you. The inherent problems of beaches is that they're made of sand, and my Ti Shepard 1 g pegs weren't up to the task of securing my tarp. I needed to run around to search some rocks and sticks to be able to tie-out my tarp, and even fill some of my stuff sacks with sand. After an hour or so I finally had a halfway decent pitch, and set out to enjoy the sunset. During the night I was woken up by my tarp flapping around and the guylines whipping my face - a storm had come up, and my improvised stakes weren't up to the task. In the rain and wind I needed to retire to the forest, where my 1 g stakes were able to do the job, with the help of some rocks on top of them. Back at home I found out I should have got myself a pair of Toughstakes - those are especially made for sand & snow camping, and would have allowed me to sleep soundly through the night. As I plan to return to that beach, and also go snow camping a few times in the coming winter, it would be kind of you to drop a pair of Small Toughstakes into my stockings when you stop by. I will leave you a photo of my perfect pitch at the beach then next year!

Best,

- An aspiring UL-Backpacker

Top 25 hiking blogs that send visitors to Two-Heel Drive

Tonight I checked my Google Analytics logs and compiled the top 25 hiking blogs most likely to link back to Two-Heel Drive. They reflect a welcome trend: We’re starting to see a return to the good old days when hiking bloggers linked to each other all time. Each act of linking encouraged more linking, creating a beneficial cycle of goodwill — and Google juice. Over the past couple years it seemed like so much linking and sharing had gravitated to Facebook and Twitter that it was becoming nigh unto impossible to attract inbound traffic from other bloggers. Now I’m glad to see things are turning around. Of course the main motivation for linking should be to point out cool content on sites you admire, but there’s another excellent side benefit: the more you link to other sites, the more likely they’ll link back to you. Those inbound links are a huge deal in Google’s eyes. The more you have, the better your site ranks. These are my top 25 referrers, in order of most traffic they sent in the past 30 days: 1. Dear Santa,

as you might know by now, oil-based materials are very much used among UL backpackers. And while I'm able to accept this for my cuben tarp, using a synthetic material as towel just somehow doesn't feel right. Imagine my relief as I found out that LOCUS GEAR from Japan actually offers towels made of a natural material which have a beautiful pattern and are light! They're called Tenugui and are made of cotton ise, a natural material, are wonderfully soft to the touch and a joy to look at. I imagine even my wife and kids would fancy each one of them, so beautiful they are. I'd love to get some for me and the family, so I hope you think of us when you're in Japan!
